Attorney Cassandra Neely to Give 2013 Fall Commencement Speech
Penn State Shenango will hold its 2013 fall commencement ceremony at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 20, in the Shenango campus auditorium with a reception immediately following. Dr. Fred Leeds, chancellor, will confer baccalaureate and associate degrees on the graduating students.
The ceremony will open with the academic processional played by pianist Larry Perna followed by the National Anthem sung by Shenango campus students Khyana Johnson, Juanita Mennor, and Zachary Van Horn.
Brandi Baros, assistant professor of biology and faculty marshal, will then welcome graduates, family members, and guests to the 2013 fall commencement ceremony.
This year, Penn State Shenango welcomes Dr. Cassandra M. Neely, attorney at law, Neely Law Offices. as its guest speaker. Neely is an attorney in Clarion, Pennsylvania, where she established a solo law practice: the Law Offices of Cassandra M. Neely, in March 2013. Prior to starting her own practice, Neely was a senior partner in the law firm of Garbarino, Neely, Hindman & Huwar.
Prior to becoming an attorney, Neely was on the faculty of Clarion University for eight years, where she served as the director of the university’s Upward Bound Program. She also was an assistant professor, teaching undergraduate business law courses in the College of Business and undergraduate and graduate English courses in the department of English.
Neely graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from Penn State University and a master’s degree in English from Clarion University. In 1989, she received her law degree from West Virginia University College of Law.
Neely was a member of the Law Review, serving as managing editor. She authored the article “Excessive Fees and Attorney Discipline.” In addition to serving on Law Review, she was a member of the Law School’s Order of the Coif, a national law school academic honorary society limited to the top ten percent of each law school class.
This year’s graduating student address will be given by Sarah E. Prichard, human development and family studies major, from Sharpsville, Pa.
Prichard received the Outstanding Adult Student Award in the spring of 2013. During her tenure at Penn State Shenango, she has been a leader of several student organizations, including past president of the HDFS Club and co-chair of the Penn State Shenango THON committee. Prichard was also a senator-at-large in the Student Government Association, where she represented the students on a variety of issues. In addition to her academics and campus responsibilities, Prichard is a single parent.
The commencement ceremony will conclude with the induction of the 2013 Penn State graduates into the Penn State Shenango Alumni Society by Society President Christine Scherer.
