Bottom Fields

For roughly the last century, I have split my time between some form of communication (either teaching it or doing it professionally) and theatre.  Okay, I may be exaggerating …a little, but I have been teaching speech and theatre courses for a very long time!  At Penn State Shenango, I am most likely teaching CAS100B: Effective Speech (small group) or CAS100A: Effective Speech (public speaking) and CAS203: Interpersonal Communication, along with a wide variety of theatre courses routinely and a film course occasionally.

In my spare time, I am usually working on a project for the Drama Club, of which I am the Advisor.  We favor shows that can be performed by a flexible number of people with a wide range of experience levels, that usually have a comic aspect to them, and that often have a musical aspect to them but are not as complex as a typical Broadway musical.  Sometimes the shows are original, written by me (Star Child; 2016) or in collaboration with our students (How the Grouch Saved Christmas; 2015) or even written entirely by a student (Homicidal for the Holidays; 2013), but usually they have been written by professional playwrights.

Despite our staging, lighting, sound, and budget constraints, we produce entertaining, quality shows designed to appeal to both the campus and community.  Most of our productions are also designed to be family friendly, both in subject matter and in cost.  You don’t have to have stage experience to join us—there are lots of jobs that go into bringing a show into production, and only a few of them are on stage.

The Drama Club is committed to helping the community, and we have consistently been able to contribute significant financial support to the Community Food Warehouse and AWARE of Mercer County each year.

Unleash your creativity and find ways to engage in the life of our community.  Come join me on the journey!
