SHARON, Pa. — Penn State Shenango welcomes the Balafon West African Dance Ensemble to campus as part of its series of Black History Month events. The performance will be held in the Shenango Auditorium on Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Originally established in Washington D.C., the now Pittsburgh-based organization partners with local artists, dancers, and musicians from all over the world, offering programs that allow people to experience dancing and African culture. According to the organization’s website, Balafon skillfully blends the classic traditions of West African culture with contemporary arts and social consciousness.
Wednesday’s performance will incorporate live music and dancing, providing a taste of classical arts from Guinea and other areas of West Africa.
Balafon West African Dance Ensemble derives its name from the ancient West African balafon instrument, an ancestor to the modern xylophone.
Penn State Shenango is located at 147 Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon. The Shenango Auditorium entrance can be accessed along Shenango Avenue. All campus parking lots are available for guest parking. Visit the campus map for parking information.
