Engage with our community of inspired leaders
The Honors Program at Penn State Shenango enhances the academic experience for students with the ability and desire to excel intellectually.
In addition to honors coursework, students enjoy special academic privileges, including early registration, a more liberal library borrowing policy, and further access to research opportunities.
Shenango's Honors Program can also serve as a gateway to the Schreyer Honors College for those students who demonstrate exceptional academic performance.
What to expect as an honors student
Access to honors courses
Each semester the campus offers courses specifically designated for honors students. These courses cover a range of subject areas and are appropriate for students in all fields of study.
Adding an honors option to an existing course
The honors option allows honors and Schreyer students to investigate selected topics in greater depth, in many cases conducting original research under the direction of a faculty member.
Honors options have been offered in biology, business, chemistry, communications, comparative literature, criminal justice, engineering, English literature, finance, history, information sciences, mathematics, physics, psychology, religious studies, sociology, Spanish, speech communications, theater arts, and women's studies. Taking an honors independent study
Many faculty members offer independent study courses (of varying numbers of credits) to honors and Schreyer students. Typically, these courses are designed collaboratively by the student and professor and are much more research-intensive.
Scheduling priority registration
Beginning with the second semester pre-registration, honors and Schreyer students have first choice of courses and sections. Do not underestimate this perk!
Special library privileges
Honors and Schreyer students enjoy the same borrowing privileges as faculty and may check out books for the entire semester unless a special recall is placed on the materials.
